The "Human" Flavor Trap
We love our cats like family members, but their metabolism is radically different. What is a delicacy to you can be a fatal toxin to them. Today we reveal the blacklist of foods that must never touch your pet's tongue.
1. The Milk Myth
Almost all adult cats are lactose intolerant. Giving milk to your cat can cause severe diarrhea and chronic dehydration. Many owners assume "they like it", but the internal damage is silent and persistent.
2. Garlic and onion
They contain compounds that destroy red blood cells, causing hemolytic anemia. Even in powdered form, these ingredients are deadly over time. Many pâtés and homemade meals contain traces of these vegetables, which are toxic to cats.
3. Chocolate and caffeine
Chocolate contains theobromine, which cats can't process. It causes arrhythmias and tremors and can lead to heart failure within hours. Caffeine speeds up their metabolism to dangerous levels.
4. Grapes and Raisins
They cause acute kidney failure. Scientists still don't know why, but veterinary statistics are clear: they are pure poison for felines.
5. Alcohol and Raw Dough
A tiny amount of alcohol is enough to cause vomiting, disorientation, and difficulty breathing in a cat. Raw yeast dough is doubly dangerous: it expands in the stomach and, as it ferments, produces alcohol. Never leave rising dough within their reach.
6. Cooked Bones
Cooking makes bones brittle, and they splinter easily. Those splinters can get stuck in the throat, puncture the intestine, or cause obstructions that require surgery. If you want to give your kitty a treat, choose one designed for cats.
7. Raw Fish
Many raw fish contain an enzyme that destroys thiamine (vitamin B1), which is essential for your cat. A lack of it causes severe neurological problems, such as seizures. In addition, raw fish can transmit bacteria like salmonella.
8. Excess Tuna
A little bit of tuna every now and then is not a big deal, but making it the basis of their diet is a mistake. Tuna intended for human consumption does not meet their nutritional needs and, in excess, can provide too much mercury. Furthermore, many cats become addicted to its flavor and later reject their regular food.
9. Raw Eggs
Raw eggs can harbor bacteria like salmonella or E. coli. Moreover, raw egg whites contain avidin, a protein that prevents the absorption of biotin, which is key for their skin and coat. If you want to give your kitty egg, make sure it is always well cooked and unseasoned.
10. Fat and Meat Scraps
Fat trimmings and chicken skin seem like a harmless treat, but they can cause vomiting and diarrhea. In the long run, they add empty calories and promote obesity. In addition, seasoned leftovers often hide garlic or onion.
