Can you bathe a kitten? When yes, when no, and how to do it safely

You can, but it is almost never needed: cats clean themselves, and iCatCare says there is no reason to bathe a healthy cat. Only bathe them if they got very dirty or covered in something sticky or toxic, or if the vet tells you to. If you do bathe them, use warm water and cat shampoo, and dry them well so they do not get cold.

Why kittens almost never need a bath

Cats have their own cleaning tools: tongue and teeth. The ASPCA notes that most stay fairly clean and rarely need a bath, though regular brushing is a good idea. iCatCare goes further: if your cat is healthy, there is no reason to bathe them, and most do not tolerate it well.

What does help from a young age is getting them used to brushing with short sessions and treats. If they have long hair, like a Persian cat, frequent brushing is essential.

At what age you can bathe them

There is no single age in the sources we checked. What they agree on is that very young kittens do not regulate their temperature well and get cold easily. For a kitten only a few weeks old, ask the vet before bathing them, and prefer cleaning just the dirty area with a warm damp cloth.

Exception: fleas on very young kittens. The National Kitten Coalition (NKC) explains that fleas can be fatal for a newborn kitten and that, because flea products are not made for that age, a bath with warm water and a flea comb can save their life. Do it with a vet's guidance. We cover this in fleas in cats.

How to bathe a kitten step by step

Based on ASPCA guidance:

  1. Pick the moment: when they are calm, for example after play.
  2. Trim their nails first (or ask the vet) and brush them to remove loose hair and mats.
  3. Set up the space: a sink or tub with a non-slip mat and 8 to 10 cm (3โ€“4 inches) of warm water.
  4. Wet them gently with a jug or handheld shower, without getting water in their eyes, ears, or nose.
  5. Diluted cat shampoo (1 part shampoo to 5 parts water), massaging from head to tail, without touching the face.
  6. Rinse very well: leftover shampoo irritates the skin.
  7. The face, only with a damp cloth and water alone.
  8. Dry them right away with a large towel, in a warm place with no drafts. If the noise does not bother them, a dryer on the lowest heat.
  9. Reward them with praise and their favorite treat.

If your kitten resists a lot and there is a risk they will hurt themselves or you, better ask the vet or a feline groomer for help.

What not to do

  • Do not use human shampoo.
  • Never use dog flea products: some contain permethrin, which is very toxic to cats and can kill a kitten.
  • Do not leave them damp or in a cold place after the bath.
  • Do not bathe them "on a routine": without a reason, it is not needed.

Signs to see the vet

Contact your vet if your kitten:

  • Got stained with a chemical, paint, oil, or something that may be toxic: they can swallow it when they lick themselves.
  • Has fleas, especially if they are very young.
  • Scratches a lot, has scabs, bald patches, or reddened skin.
  • Is lethargic or cold after the bath.
  • Has a dirty tail area from stool often: they may have diarrhea (see kitten with diarrhea).
